VARSITY SOFTBALL

Dear Softball Families:

I want to start by thanking you and your children for your commitment to our softball program. With that being said, I wanted to provide some information about the upcoming season.

After careful consideration and numerous discussions with coaching staff and district administrators, we have made the difficult decision not to field a varsity softball team for the 2026 season.

Why won’t Greenville have a varsity team this year?
Our softball program has struggled in recent years. To help our athletes compete successfully in the Patroon Conference, we need to build a stronger foundation across key areas like pitching, catching, and defense. The athletes in our program are young, and at this point, we are not in a position to field a competitive varsity team, which is why we’re taking a step back to rebuild and strengthen from the ground up.

What softball teams will be offered? Who will they play?
We will run both a Modified and a Junior Varsity (JV) team this season. The modified team will compete against other modified teams, and the JV team will compete against other JV teams.

What happens to juniors and seniors?
Both juniors and seniors are eligible to play on the JV team this season, since we will not field a varsity roster. Seniors will still take part in a senior recognition night, just as they would on a varsity team.

Why can’t all the JV players be called up to Varsity to run the program?
This decision isn’t based on numbers, it’s based on preparedness and skill level. Moving a JV roster to the Varsity level without the necessary skills in place would only change the team's name, not its level of play. Our athletes would still face what they faced last season: varsity competition without the pitching, catching, defensive consistency, and overall experience needed to compete safely and meaningfully at that level.

When will Greenville have a Varsity team again?
Our intention is to rebuild a competitive varsity program over the next one to two seasons.

We know this news is disappointing, especially for some of our upperclassmen. However, for the safety of our players and for the future of our program, we truly believe it is best to operate without a Varsity team and focus on rebuilding this season.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support of the Greenville softball program.

Sincerely,

Denise Wickham
