6th grade back to school information

Dear Sixth Grade Students, Parents, and Guardians,

Welcome to Greenville Middle School!

We hope you’ve had a restful and enjoyable summer. We welcome you to the new school year starting Thursday, September 4. Our hallways are eager to come alive with your energy, enthusiasm, and laughter!

As you transition to sixth grade, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness about leaving the familiar environment of Scott M. Ellis Elementary School. Rest assured, the faculty and staff at Greenville Middle School are dedicated to making this transition as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Over the next three years, you will experience many changes—physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. These changes are a natural and essential part of growing up, and our goal is to support and guide you through each step. We are committed to fostering a safe, caring, and stimulating environment where you can thrive academically and socially.

The following information should be helpful as you transition to middle school.

Cell Phone Policy. Here's a quick reminder of what to expect with the new policy and procedures:

  • If you did not receive a Yondr pouch during the locker day on August 27, you’ll receive one on the first day of school in your 1st period class.

  • Every morning, as you enter the building, you must show the staff that your pouch is locked.

  • You can store your locked pouch in your locker or your Chromebook bag (once you receive one).

  • At dismissal, you’ll unlock your pouch at the magnets near the exits.

  • You’ll keep your pouch with you at all times — even after school and at home.

  • A good place to keep it overnight is in the front pocket of your Chromebook bag.

Thanks for following the policy and helping keep our school focused and distraction-free.

    • After-school academic support for ELA, math, science, social studies, or world language

      • Days and times for academic support will be announced to students and posted on the daily announcements during the school year.

  • Clubs

    • Club meeting times will be announced to students, posted on the website, and included in the daily announcements throughout the school year.

Attendance

  • Attendance is an essential part of your child’s academic success.  Please note that for a student to stay after school or participate in any club or sports activity, they must be in school that day by the 1st-period bell.  If a student is late to school, they must have a doctor’s note on the doctor's letterhead to document their late arrival and participate in any extracurricular activity.

  • Please send in a note with your child when absent from school, email MSHSAttendance@greenvillecsd.org, or call 518-966-5070 ext. 405.

Chromebooks

  • Chromebooks will be handed out to all students during the first or second week of school. Please complete the Technology Equipment Loan Agreement for Students in the packet and have your child return it to their first-period teacher.

We aim to create an atmosphere for learning by setting clear expectations and directly teaching students about our expectations in all school settings. During the first few days of school, we will use class time to discuss our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support system (or PBIS), allowing us to continue creating a positive learning environment for all students.

The expectations from PBIS align with supporting the District Code of Conduct. We will also review the new cell phone policy, District Code of Conduct, and the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) with students during the school's first few weeks. We ask each parent and/or guardian to review the District Code of Conduct to help reinforce good behavior, respect, and responsibility. The full Code of Conduct is available on our district website. A paper copy is available for review in the Middle School Office.

Also included in this mailing is your student’s schedule.  You will find your student’s locker number and combination on the schedule. We hope you can attend our Sixth Grade Locker Day on August 27 from 9 AM to 11 AM. There is no schedule for the two hours, so students can come in anytime and practice opening their lockers, organizing their supplies, and walking the building with their schedule to locate classrooms.  If you cannot attend on August 27, another opportunity is Tuesday, September 2, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  If there are any problems with your student's schedule, we will accommodate changes during the first few days of school.

Enclosed, you will also find a copy of the emergency contact information we currently have on file for your student. Please review this and write any updated information/changes on the form. Please return this form, only if there are changes, along with all other forms, by bringing it to your first-period teacher, scanning it and emailing it to coonsj@greenvillecsd.org, or mailing it to Jessica Coons by Friday, September 5.
