hold

Dear Families,

I wanted to take a moment to provide you with more context regarding the “hold” that occurred today.

Towards the end of fifth grade recess, a student suffered a medical emergency while playing a friendly game of soccer. Within seconds of the incident occurring, a recess monitor was at the student’s side. She radioed for the nurse, who immediately responded, along with other members of our staff. Our school nurse, Mrs. Gardiner, accompanied the student in the ambulance to the hospital. Due to privacy reasons, I’m unable to share more about the student.

While our staff was responding, fifth graders were preparing to line up to go inside. We guided the students safely back inside, but understandably, some were visibly shaken by what they had witnessed. Teachers took the opportunity to reassure students that their classmate was receiving excellent care.

I want to commend our remarkable students for their quick thinking and compassion, as well as our staff, including the recess aides, nurses, and school resource officer, for their prompt and attentive response.

Medical emergencies can be frightening, especially for children. If you are a fifth grade parent, I encourage you to have a conversation with your child about what they saw. This can help them process their feelings and concerns.

If you feel your child could benefit from speaking with a counselor tomorrow at school, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, and we will make arrangements for that support. In addition, I will be visiting all fifth grade classrooms tomorrow to have conversations and offer my support.

Thank you,
Matt Urban
