library books

Dear Parents and Families:

I’m writing to remind you of a library practice that has been in place since I took over as Library
Media Specialist in 2021.

Middle school students receive permission slips during their first Library orientation in
September of every year. If a student in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade would like to check out a
“Young Adult” book, they must have a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian on file.

Book vendors use information determined by professional book reviewing agencies like Kirkus,
Booklist, and School Library Journal to label books according to interest levels. Books with the
“Young Adult” label have an interest level of ninth grade and above, and may contain mature
content. The permission slips distributed in September include information about the content
that may be found in these books. It is important to note that if a student wants to check out
“Young Adult” books, a new permission slip must be signed each year.

I understand many students undergo substantial growth during middle school, which is why
these permission slips can be signed and turned in at any point during the school year. If you
would like to fill out a permission slip for your student to check out Young Adult books, they can
pick up a permission slip in the Library.

We are in the process of revising our permission slip system to make them available online, as
well as adding more parent resources to our website. Once these changes take effect, parents
and families will be notified.
