Health Screening Tool: As the first day of school approaches, we will be testing the online system for reporting daily health screening information. Parents/guardians will receive test emails as follow: - Elementary Grades K-5: Wednesday September 9 and Thursday September 10 - Middle/High School: - Grades 6-12 Spartan Group: Wednesday September 9 - Grades 6-12 STRONG Group: Thursday September 10 This will allow families to see what the daily health screening procedure entails. Please complete the test screening to practice the process. Starting Friday, September 11, you will need to submit this daily health screening for your child(ren) every morning by 7:30 am. How It Works You will receive an email each morning with a link to complete the brief health screening questionnaire for your child before sending them to school. If you have more than one child, there will be a separate link for each child and you will need to complete each. The daily health screening asks Yes/No questions about recent travel, COVID exposure, and temperature (i.e., does the student member have a temperature of 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit or greater). We will be using the secure platform EdVista (you may need to check your spam folder for a message with the subject "COVID-19 Daily Health Screening Form" and allow EdVista as an approved contact). If you do not receive the test emails mentioned above, contact your school office to confirm your email address. This email will only be sent to the person listed as the primary contact. If you are unable to complete the daily health screening form (e.g. internet issues), please notify the main office of your child’s school building as soon as possible so they can check your student’s temperature upon arrival: · Elementary School: 518-966-5070 ext. 301 · Middle School: 518-966-5070 ext. 451 · High School: 518-966-5070 ext. 401 This mandatory daily health screening is a new state requirement to help ensure the health and safety of our school community. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Parents' Decisions for the 2020-2021 School Year - In order to create class lists, restructure room utilization, and disburse resources equitably, the District is collecting parents' formal decisions about the upcoming school year regarding in-person instruction (for gr. K-5), hybrid instruction (for gr. 6-12), or remote learning. Additionally, the District is collecting parents' decisions regarding transportation on the school bus. We encourage parents to complete this survey as soon as they feel prepared, but no later than August 10th. We understand that this is a difficult decision, but the sooner GCS has the information, the better we can plan for our students. We ask that if you have multiple children, please complete and submit the form for each child separately by selecting ""submit another response." Thank you. https://forms.gle/UuzxAXrTtQdtCygr5

On Saturday, June 27th, we celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating seniors. After working through various options and paying attention to the many needed details, we were proud to be able to offer an onsite commencement for the class of 2020. Unfortunately, early Saturday morning the set up for our graduation ceremony was vandalized. Chairs were rearranged and the use of the word “gay” was written as an insult. This hate speech and behavior is inappropriate and unlawful. Greene County Sheriff Deputies were onsite Saturday morning and are continuing to follow up on the incident. The District has been made aware that pictures from this incident are now circulating on social media. In reviewing concerns shared with us, there is a misconception that Mr. Ward, high school principal, and the District condoned this as a senior prank. This is not true. During his graduation speech, Mr. Ward made comments regarding all seniors being at the District on time prior to 8 am as a “reverse senior prank.” These comments were not in reference to the vandalism. This incident was not a senior prank, but the misconduct of a few individuals. We are grateful to our buildings and grounds staff, as well as others, who assisted in once again preparing the area for the beautiful ceremony that followed. The last thing we would want this incident to do is diminish the accomplishments of our seniors being celebrated on that day. We stand by our Mission statement and continue to focus on equality and inclusion for all as Greenville Central School strives to be a place where everyone learns, teaches and belongs.

So, today's trip is to the Steinway factory to see the making of a piano. The making of a Steinway piano is a time-honored process involving the hands of many skilled craftspeople over the course of almost a full year. Steinway & Sons pianos are built in just two factories worldwide - one in Astoria, NY and one in Hamburg, Germany. Both factories have been building pianos for well over a century, and although Steinway has always been at the cutting edge in utilizing and perfecting the latest technology where it could make the piano better, they have found that certain things are simply better when done by skilled craftspeople than by a machine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAInt7hIZlU

Thursday April 23 Virtual Field Trip We continue our exploration of interesting living organisms on planet earth. This time lapse video shows the movement and growth of plants. You will look at a plant differently after watching this! Plants on the forest floor are too far away from the essential light source 50 meters up in the canopy, but they needn't be passive. If the light won't come to them, they can go to the light; they need to climb. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p005fptt

Wednesday April 22 Virtual Field Trip Today is Earth Day! Our virtual field trip is a "visit" with Jane Goodall. Click the link to see a brief video about Jane and then explore her website to learn so much more about her work. Equipped with little more than a notebook, binoculars, and her fascination with wildlife, Jane Goodall braved a realm of unknowns to give the world a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives. Through nearly 60 years of groundbreaking work, Dr. Jane Goodall has not only shown us the urgent need to protect chimpanzees from extinction; she has also redefined species conservation to include the needs of local people and the environment. Today she travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees and environmental crises, urging each of us to take action on behalf of all living things and planet we share. https://www.janegoodall.org/our-story/about-jane/

Tuesday April 21 Virtual Field Trip Today we continue our theme of nature as part of celebrating Earth Day this week. Let's visit with a little mammal called a sengi. For maximum efficiency, the sengi creates an intricate network of pathways through the undergrowth that enable it to reach prey more easily. The sengi carries a mental map of these pathways, and should trouble appear, its speed and intimate knowledge of escape routes help it win the day. I'm impressed with how fast this little creature can go! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p004v9sm

Thursday April 16 Virtual Field Trip Today sticks with the theme of space from yesterday's trip to the International Space Station. Check out the Discovery space shuttle and a variety of other aircraft at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Discovery (OV-103) was NASA's third space shuttle orbiter to join the fleet, arriving for the first time at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in November 1983. Discovery launched on its final flight to the International Space Station on the STS-133 mission February 24, 2011. Check it out up close and personal through this site. https://tinyurl.com/ycw3xfo7

Tuesday April 14 Virtual Field Trip Today's trip is to the White House! For more than 200 years, the White House has been more than just the home of the Presidents and their families. On this rainy day in NY, I thought a good virtual field trip would be to Washington DC to see the cherry blossoms. The planting of cherry trees originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the United States from Japan. In Japan, the flowering cherry tree, or "Sakura," is an exalted flowering plant. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with the evanescence of human life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNRgkrFF7qo

St. Patrick's Day Parade info from Mr. Lammly: PARADE INFORMATION Thank you to the large number of students who will be participating in this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 21st! I have just received information from the parade organizers regarding the start time: The parade will begin at 1pm. Greenville HS Band students must arrive at the HS Band Room by 11:30am. Attire for the parade: clean black dress slacks (no jeans/leggings), comfortable sneakers, and a school-provided sweatshirt. Sweatshirts will be handed out in the band room on the morning of the parade. It is my hope to make this experience more inclusive to our younger instrumental students as well. I am happy to say that a couple of elementary and middle school students will be marching with us carrying our banner and flags!
